1889 Foundation Awards $15,000 Grant to Penn Highlands Community College Foundation to Support Culinary Scholarships

Johnstown, PA – The 1889 Foundation has awarded a $15,000 grant to the Penn Highlands Community College Foundation to support scholarships for students pursuing culinary arts. The funding, provided through the Supporting Scholars Fund, will help expand access to education and hands-on training for aspiring chefs in the region.

The grant coincides with the annual Chef Auction, a signature fundraising event that brings together top local culinary talent in support of student success. This year’s contribution from the 1889 Foundation strengthens the event’s impact and helps build a stronger pipeline of skilled professionals in the region’s growing food and hospitality industry.

“Access to education is one of the most powerful tools we have to improve both individual lives and the vitality of our region,” said Sue Mann, President of the 1889 Foundation. “We’re proud to support Penn Highlands students who are passionate about culinary arts and eager to make a difference in their communities. This investment aligns with our mission to promote health, wellness, and economic opportunity throughout the Cambria and Somerset County region.”

The Supporting Scholars Fund was created to reduce financial barriers for students pursuing high-demand careers. The culinary program at Penn Highlands prepares students with real-world experience and industry certification, equipping graduates for success in a variety of professional kitchen settings.

Penn Highlands Community College Foundation expressed gratitude for the continued partnership with the 1889 Foundation and its shared commitment to uplifting local students and strengthening the regional workforce.
