Johnstown, PA — The Women’s Help Center in Johnstown has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the 1889 Foundation to support the Community Help Center (CHC) Emergency Shelter program, the region’s key housing hub addressing homelessness and housing insecurity throughout Cambria County.
The CHC provides a comprehensive range of prevention and intervention services designed to ensure access to stable housing and critical support resources. Through case management, housing advocacy, and resource navigation, the program helps individuals and families overcome homelessness by connecting them with healthcare, behavioral health, substance use treatment, and other essential services.
This past fiscal year, the Community Help Center provided more than 20,000 nights of safe housing for 320 adults and 207 children experiencing homelessness. The emergency shelter offers family-style accommodations with 32 beds on-site, and the Shelter Contingency Program provides off-site shelter and case management for men who cannot be housed at the facility.
“The rising costs of essentials like food and utilities have increased operational challenges, but thanks to the 1889 Foundation’s generous support, we can continue providing housing, case management, and vital resources to our community’s most vulnerable,” said Roxann Tiger, Executive Director of the Women’s Help Center. “Their commitment to Cambria County is truly exceptional, and we are deeply grateful for this partnership.”
Sue Mann, President of the 1889 Foundation, said “We’re proud to support the Women’s Help Center and their Community Help Center program. Providing stable housing and comprehensive services is critical to breaking the cycle of homelessness in Cambria County. This grant reflects our ongoing commitment to invest in programs that improve lives and strengthen our community.”
