For the second year, the 1889 Foundation has provided a $500,000 challenge grant to the United Way of the Laurel Highlands to increase the reach and impact of the United Way’s Community Impact Grants. These grants are distributed to high-performing non-profit agencies in Cambria and Somerset Counties that provide evidence-based programming that addresses social change initiatives in three main areas: preparing all children socially, emotionally, and academically for kindergarten; increasing parental knowledge of child development and care; and preventing youth drug and alcohol use.

On Tuesday, May 2, the United Way announced $1.3 million in grant disbursements, a figure that includes the $500,000 grant from the 1889 Foundation.
